John Whelan is the former editor of the Leinster Express, Offaly Express and Leinster Leader newspapers and subsequently became a Senator. John has vast expertise in writing, editing and campaign organisation. He has an extensive contacts list in local and national politics and media and is also a published author.

He specialises in small businesses, event management and product launches, working with community based NG0s and has a particular penchant for the arts, rural Ireland and the environment.

He has served as an elected member of Seanad Eireann as a Labour Senator from 2011 to 2016 a term during which he focussed on the sustainability of the regions and rural communities; support for the arts and working artists; protecting biodiversity and the environment and the accountability and transparency of public bodies including the charity sector.

During his term as a Senator he was appointed to serve on the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission and the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Energy, Communications and Natural Resources.

From 2006 to 2008 he was Editor of the Leinster Leader and also spent 16 years from 1990 to 2006 as the Editor of the Leinster Express and Offaly Express Newspapers, Portlaoise and Tullamore

During this period the Leinster Express established itself as the leading selling regional newspaper in the country at that time, pro rata to its population base, with 78% verified market penetration. John also worked for RTE, the Irish Press, Sunday Business Post, Sunday Independent, Irish Independent, specialising in politics, current affairs, the arts and the environment. He was the Founding director of the Laois Arts Festival, the Portlaoise Jazz Festival and the Mountmellick Mardi Gras. John also edited and published the bestselling cookery books: Jim’s Kitchen.

He has also published the new age fable ‘The Buddha of Ballyhuppahaun’ (2010) and the journalistic memoir, ‘Growing Pains and Growing Up’ (2019).

He is author of the popular camping and campervan blog, Vanhalla – Camper Heaven www.vanhalla.ie

John is currently working on a trilogy of books for children based on a love of nature and wildlife, the first of which will be published this autumn. It’s all very exciting, watch this space…
